Man reading an ebook

One can find thousands of ebooks online these days. The popularity of ebooks among readers has grown significantly. Why however, do so many people prefer ebooks over paper books and vice versa?

Advantages of eBooks

Whether a person prefers an ebook or a paper book depends on the interests of the reader and is also partially based on the lifestyle they have. There are however reasons for preferring either an ebook or paper book over the other. One of these reasons is availability. Readers want to read books that have their interest. Even though the Internet has only been available to use for a few decades you will be able to find most of the old books which are translated into ebooks online. Most of the newer books can be found online in the form of ebooks as soon as they are released. Other ebooks do not even have a paper version. You can basically say that you will be able to search and find an ebook online in a decent amount time. When you are looking for a book in a bookstore or library, you have a limited choice which isn’t the case when you look online.

You do not have to leave your home to start reading a nice book if you purchase an ebook. You can purchase an ebook 24/7 while shops and stores close at certain times. If you order a book you will have to wait for it as well. In most cases, the ebooks that are available online are cheaper than the paper books because no materials are needed and less manpower is needed to keep a site working than running a shop or library.

Convenience Is Important

Another important factor is the space that books take up in someone’s home. Even though it looks good to have a bunch of books somewhere in a closet or something similar, if you like to read the amount of books will increase in time, taking up valuable space in one’s home. If you read ebooks you can store them on your computer which means that they do not take any physical space at all.

Because you can store the ebooks on your computer you can easily categorize them which will make it easier to find them. Lending a book to someone is a nice thing to do. With ebooks however, you can just send the file or document while keeping the ebook on your own computer. You can of course put ebooks on different kinds of devices like laptops, PDA’s etc. which allows you to travel with an entire library with you. You can also burn them on CD’s or place them on other devices that can store information.

Why eBooks Are Gaining Popularity

Ebooks have many advantages over paper books. Reading a paper book is still preferred by some people because they can’t stare at the screen for a longer period of time. Especially for those that work at a computer this factor can play a big role in their decision to choose a paper book over an ebook. Besides this factor it seems that the ebook is slowly replacing the paper book.

I think it’s perfectly clear that the advantage lies in the fact that you can hold a plethora of books in one book-like device, such as the kindle or the recently brought out iPad, so basically the arguement is amount of books vs. personal feeling. Many of my friends use their Kindles on a day to day basis and refuse to read a regular book.
